In short
Steel sheet weight is calculated as thickness (mm) × width (m) × length (m) × 7.85. One square metre of 1 mm steel weighs 7.85 kg.

The formula
The density of steel is taken as 7.85 g/cm³ (7850 kg/m³). This means one square metre of 1 mm steel sheet weighs 7.85 kg.
Weight (kg) = Thickness (mm) × Width (m) × Length (m) × 7.85
Examples
| Size | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 0.50 × 1000 × 2000 mm | 0.50 × 1 × 2 × 7.85 | 7.85 kg |
| 1.00 × 1250 × 2500 mm | 1 × 1.25 × 2.5 × 7.85 | 24.53 kg |
| 2.00 × 1500 × 3000 mm | 2 × 1.5 × 3 × 7.85 | 70.65 kg |
Coil length
When the coil weight is known, its length is:
Length (m) = Coil weight (kg) ÷ (Thickness (mm) × Width (m) × 7.85)
For example, a 5-tonne coil of 0.50 × 1250 mm: 5000 ÷ (0.50 × 1.25 × 7.85) ≈ 1019 m.
Effect of the coating
The zinc coating is added separately: 0.275 kg/m² for Z275. On thin sheets this is a few percent. Rolling tolerances can also make actual weight deviate 1–3% from the calculated value.
