What is tile-effect trapezoidal sheet?
Tile-effect trapezoidal sheet, also called metal roof tile, is pre-painted galvanized steel formed on a special line with both longitudinal ribs and transverse steps, so the finished roof looks like rows of tiles. It differs from plain trapezoidal sheet in appearance and is chosen for residential roofs where looks matter.
Compared with clay tiles
- Light weight: metal tile weighs a small fraction of clay tile, reducing the load on the roof frame and the building. Use the trapezoidal sheet weight calculator for weight by thickness.
- Unbreakable: no breakage from hail, foot traffic or transport.
- Fast installation: one sheet replaces many rows of tiles and is screwed to the battens.
- Noise and condensation: thin metal transmits more rain noise than clay and condensation can form beneath it, so an underlay membrane and a ventilated gap are recommended.
Sizes and thickness
Tile-effect sheet is generally 0.40–0.60 mm thick with an effective cover width of about 1 metre; step pitch and cover width vary slightly by manufacturer. Colours
The most requested shade is RAL 3009 oxide red, close to clay tile colour, followed by dark browns and RAL 7016 anthracite grey. Other RAL colours depend on availability. See pre-painted steel colours.
Installation notes
- Roof pitch must be higher than for plain trapezoidal sheet so the pattern can shed water; follow the manufacturer's minimum pitch.
- Sheets are fixed just below the step line with colour-matched screws with EPDM washers; batten spacing follows the step pitch.
- Ridge, valley and eaves details are closed with matching-colour accessories.
- Cut with shears rather than abrasive discs, which burn the paint.
