Can You Paint Galvanized Steel? How to Paint Galvanized Sheet

· 2 min read

In short

Galvanized sheet can be painted, but paint applied as on bare steel will peel. Degrease, lightly abrade, use a primer made for zinc (epoxy, acrylic or wash primer) and a compatible topcoat; never apply alkyd (oil-based) paint directly. Zinc plus paint (a duplex system) lasts longer than both separately.

Can galvanized steel be painted?

Yes, galvanized sheet can be painted, but if it is painted like bare steel the paint soon blisters and peels. There are two reasons: new galvanized surfaces carry passivation and oil from production, and zinc reacts chemically with some paints. With proper cleaning and a zinc-compatible primer, paint on galvanizing lasts longer than on bare steel.

Why some paints peel off galvanizing

  • Alkyd (oil-based) paints: in contact with zinc the paint binder saponifies; the paint loses adhesion and lifts in sheets. These paints should not be applied directly to galvanizing.
  • Dirty or oily surface: passivation, oil, dust and white rust come between paint and zinc.
  • Very smooth surface: the bright surface of new galvanizing makes mechanical adhesion difficult.

Painting galvanized steel step by step

  1. Degrease: wash with an alkaline degreaser, rinse thoroughly and dry completely. Remove any white rust with a stiff nylon brush.
  2. Abrade: remove the shine with light sanding, an abrasive pad or low-pressure sweep blasting. The aim is to dull the surface, not remove zinc; blasting must be light enough not to thin the coating.
  3. Prime: use a primer made for galvanizing; zinc-compatible epoxy or acrylic primers or a wash primer are common choices. The product data sheet should state suitability for galvanized surfaces.
  4. Topcoat: apply a topcoat compatible with the primer (e.g. acrylic or polyurethane) at the thickness the manufacturer recommends. Outdoors, choose a UV-resistant topcoat.

Galvanizing that has weathered outdoors for a while is matt and has formed a stable zinc layer; once degreased it is easier to paint than new galvanizing.

Duplex system: zinc and paint together

Paint over galvanizing is called a duplex system. The paint slows zinc loss by shielding it from air and moisture; the zinc stops rust creeping under the paint. Industry sources report that together they can last about 1.5–2.5 times the sum of their separate lives. For galvanizing life outdoors, see how long galvanized steel lasts.

Paint later or buy pre-painted sheet?

For roofs, façades and other large surfaces, factory pre-painted steel is usually more economical and durable: the paint is applied on a controlled line at constant thickness and oven-cured. Site painting suits small parts, later colour changes, repairs and special colours. For pre-painted layers and paint systems, see the PE, SMP and PVDF guide.

When to use cold galvanizing (zinc spray)

Cold galvanizing is a paint with a high content of zinc dust; it is not a true galvanized coating. It is used to repair cut edges, welds and damaged galvanized surfaces. It does not replace galvanized sheet for protecting large areas.
